NEWS CENTER – Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Rojhilat Kurdistan Human Rights Network have called on the United Nations to halt executions and ensure the immediate release of detainees, drawing attention to the situation of thousands of detained civilians and political prisoners.
Human Rights Watch and the Rojhilat Kurdistan Human Rights Network issued a statement on the threat of executions facing political prisoners and the condition of detained civilians.
The statement said political prisoners are being exposed to a dual danger. On one hand, it pointed to the threat of military attacks by the United States and Israel, while on the other, it stressed that Iranian authorities are targeting political prisoners through widespread human rights violations. These violations were said to include mass, unlawful and secret executions.
EXECUTIONS: CAUSE FOR CONCERN
The statement noted that nine political prisoners have been executed during the wartime period on charges of “being armed” and “rebellion,” expressing concern over the increase in executions targeting political prisoners. It also highlighted that Iranian authorities have been unwilling to release detainees under wartime conditions and that mass and arbitrary detentions of activists and civilians have intensified.
LIMITED ACCESS TO BASIC NEEDS
The statement said thousands of detainees are being deprived of their right to defense and lack access to safe shelter, leaving them caught between internal repression and external attacks, with some prisons reportedly under threat of bombardment. It added that detainees face reduced food rations, declining service quality, lack of access to medication and medical supervision, and restrictions on communication with their families.
CALL TO THE UN
HRW and the Rojhilat Kurdistan Human Rights Network called on the United Nations to increase pressure on Iran, urging an immediate halt to executions and the release of political prisoners and those arbitrarily detained.
